Men-Tsee-Khang is officially also known as Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute. The instutute was founded by the 13th Dalai Lama, at Lhasa in the year 1916. It was established in India by 14th Dalai Lama only when the Tibet went under the control of China. The main aim of the institute is to To promote and practice Tibetan Medicine, to provide healthcare only based on service orientation. Only in India there are around 53 branch clinics.
Tibetan Medical & Astro. College was established in the year 1961. The institute contains several departments such as Astrology, Materia Medica, Documentation and Publication, Research & Development, Herbal Products Research and Pharmaceutical. The world famous doctor, Dr. Yeshi Dhonden was the chief medical director of the institute during 1961-1966. He was also the personal physician of Dalai Lama during 1963-1980.
